Two cases of SARS have hit San Francisco. One is at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center and the other is at Kaiser in San Francisco.
There are some who are voicing concern in San Francisco because many of its residents have weakened immune systems due to various diseases.
At this time, there is not a cure, a shot, a magic bullet, or a cocktail. Your body has to fight it off.
Perhaps it is not time to panic and I have no reason to believe it is widespread, but I have reports that some in SF do not want to take the public bus or eat in certain Asian restaurants who may have visitors from Hong Kong. I haven't followed the story as much as some, but I understand that you may not know you have SARS for up to 10 days. In crowded cities, this could be devastating.

San Francisco has got to be one of the most vulnerable places for such an outbreak, considering the number of men with AIDS up there.

SARs has been around for as long as there's been people. Doctors throw just about every respitory problem into the SARs category. However, this is a deadly strain of SARs.

why not just come out and say.....many of the residents are gays, drug abusers, and have AIDS.....

SARS has been spreading worldwide pretty rapidly.
Makes one wonder if everyone inside cities will have to start wearing filters over their mouths while outside of their homes.

All that coughing and touching in the streets will spread this like wild fire.

If I were to choose the absolute best place in the US for this strain of SARS to surface so that it would spread logrithmically throughout the country, it would have been San Francisco. Epidemiologically, San Franciscans made the most ignorant and uninformed decisions in the prevention of a previous emerging disease, AIDS. SARS IMHO is going to be in the entire country's population within the next year, contridicting the predictions of the German microbiologist that it would play out.
Pathogenic coronaviruses and paramyxoviruses spread rapidly throughout the animal population and with animals one has the luxury of more stringent control methods (test and slaughter). San Francisco's track record on disease control is about equal with that of no control.

why not just come out and say.....many of the residents are gays, drug abusers, and have AIDS.....They ALSO have an extensive cancer ward with many children. Not to mention the other diseases like lukemia, etc. that effects the imune system.

SARS HAS BEEN AROUND FOREVER. DOCTORS THROW MOST RESPITORY ILLNESSES INTO THAT CATEGORY. THIS IS ONLY NEW BECAUSE IT'S CAUSING DEATHS.

Unfortunately, this is a slow process, and tends toward an expanding public health problem. The classical solution is quarantine. How many public health problems are we going to permit before isolating the root cause.
